Rider hazing defendants apply for PTI program
Two of three Rider University student defendants who are charged with
aggravated hazing in the drinking death of a fraternity pledge appeared in
court Monday and are applying to enter the Pretrial Intervention Program.
Freshman Gary DeVercelly Jr., 18, died in March after drinking heavily
during an initiation ritual.
Lawyers for Dominic Olsen, 21, the pledge master of now defunct Phi Kappa
Tau fraternity, and Adriano DiDonato, 22, told Superior Court Judge
Mitchell Ostrer that their clients are applying for PTI, which, if
sucessfully completed will allow the criminal charge against them to be
expunged. The terms of their admission to the program, which is routinely
offered to first-time, non-violent offenders, will be set at their next
status conference on Oct. 1.
Sigma Phi Epsilon's two most important rules for pledging were: “Don’t talk about pledgeship” and “don’t die.”

New information surfaced Thursday concerning the death of a University of Texas student last year.
The Travis County District Attorney's office is investigating whether the student, Tyler Cross, was a victim of hazing.
The 18-year-old fell to his death from a fifth story balcony last November at the University Towers dormitory. An autopsy later showed cross was legally intoxicated at the time.
A search warrant, filed by the county attorney's office and seeking information from Google, Inc, tells what happened before he died.
Investigators are gathering information that was shared online by members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fall 2006 pledge class at UT, of which Cross was a member.

Suspended sorority sisters suing SIUC
By Bethany krajelis, The Southern
CARBONDALE - Three suspended Southern Illinois University Carbondale students are suing the university and five of its employees for racial discrimination stemming from an alleged 2004 sorority hazing incident.
Monet Williams, Tequeira Johnson and Nakia Collins - members of the historically black Zeta Phi Beta sorority - claim the university disciplined them differently because they were black. The university, however, contends that no racial discrimination took place and referred to incidents where both black and white students in SIUC's Greek system were suspended.

Three members of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity may become the first to be prosecuted for hazing under Matt’s Law. District Attorney Mike Ramsey says people need to know that crimes like hazing will be taken very seriously and those responsible will be held to answer.
According to Ramsey, the hazing activity took place against a group of pledges last April and was serious enough to elicit legal action. Christopher Bizot, 23, and Michael Murphy, 22, were the president and vice president of the fraternity at the time of the alleged hazing. Also indicted is Matthew Krupp, 23, the fraternity’s ritualist.
