Kappa Delta Phi Helps Out for the Holiday
Submitted by Hermes on Sat, 11/24/2007 - 04:43.

Brothers from Alpha Chapter of Kappa Delta Phi at Bridgewater State College spent the early part of this week ensuring that some area families in need have a happy Thanksgiving. Alpha Chapter held its 4th annual Thanksgiving canned food drive and collected 60 bags of groceries for the North Easton-based My Brother's Keeper.
Sixteen Brothers from Alpha Chapter were involved in this year's drive, and they placed collection bags at Roche Bros. in Bridgewater (which donated the bags) and distributed empty bags to 500 homes in town. On Sunday they collected the bags and put together a trove of goodies that will surely brighten the holiday for many area families.
"I was speechless at some of the stuff we collected. People were very generous", said Brother Dan Kent, Alpha Chapter's philanthropy chairman.
During the week, the students also brought food to their peers who were participating in BSC's Tent City.
Each year, the drive is an important event for Kappa Delta Phi, Brother Kent said.
"One of the main reasons we do it is not just to help others, but for ourselves," he said, "so we can learn more about service and educate others about the homeless." (John Winters, Office of Institutional Communications)

A knot of husky young men chanted raucously as they jogged from Harley Hall to a waiting car, where they snatched up suitcases, storage bins and a small refrigerator before disappearing back inside a Shippensburg University residence hall.
The scene replayed itself several times as 1,700 SU freshman moved into their campus homes Thursday morning, leaving traffic tangled from the university eastward to the Exit 29 interchange of Interstate 81.
Tom Konen and a dozen Kappa Sigma fraternity brothers made short work of mounds of luggage trucked in by arriving students and their parents. The Kappa Sigma “bellhops” were just one of many Greek organizations and athletic teams that turned out to help incoming freshmen.

UT sororities are not just a group of girls who make T-shirts for every occasion. The University's chapter of the Delta Delta Delta sorority donated $77,000 to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as part of the organization's philanthropy.
"We really care about our St. Jude," said Holly Turpin, president of the sorority and a marketing senior.
The sorority hosted two fundraisers in the past year that raised more money than any other Tri Delta chapter in the nation, Turpin said.

Here I was thinking I was going to help these people in need, but I know that they helped me much more than I helped them – not physically, but spiritually. – Dan Parsons
A summer trip for a group of University of Cincinnati fraternity brothers was far from the typical trip to a beach or a hike in the mountains. In fact, on their arrival, Dan Parsons says they felt they had entered another world. Parsons, a fifth-year major in finance and digital business from Symmes Township, and nine other members of the UC chapter of Sigma Chi Fraternity took off for Haiti last month to spend a week working with a missionary organization, working in extreme heat to patch up a school and visit with children housed at an orphanage and a jail.
